1992 Vuelta a España

1992 Vuelta a España

The 47th "Vuelta a España" (Tour of Spain), a long-distance bicycle stage race and one of the 3 grand tours, was held from April 27 to May 17, 1992. It consisted of 20 stages covering a total of 3395 km, and was won by Tony Rominger of the Clas-Cajastur cycling team.

The favourites at the start of the race were Erik Breukink, Robert Millar, Steven Rooks and Stephen Roche. The defending champion Melchor Mauri and the two time Vuelta champion Pedro Delgado together with Laudelino Cubino were the Spanish hopes for the win.

After the first week which was suited for sprinters, Erik Breukink won the first individual time trial but Jesus Montoya created the revelation of the race when he finished second on this stage and took the leader’s jersey which he kept for much of the race. Tony Rominger closed in on the leader’s jersey during the stage in the Pyrenees which was won by Laudelino Cubino. Despite the form displayed by Pedro Delgado when he won the stage to Lacs de Covadonga, it was Rominger who won the final individual time trial and took the leader’s jersey from Montoya. Rominger then confirmed his form with a stage win the following day. Rominger won the Vuelta and became the first Swiss to win the Spanish stage race.
