In 1890, Walter W. Law bought his first convert|232|acre|km2 when he retired from W. & J. Sloan; he called this land Briarcliff Farm. He later owned convert|5000|acre|km2 and developed the village. It is said that 'manor' was added to the village's name after Law's friend Andrew Carnegie jokingly referred to Law as the "Laird of Briarcliff Manor" and the name stuck. The village is now located convert|30|mi|km north of Manhattan and is accessed by many major highways, including the Taconic State Parkway.

It is home to the Briarcliff Manor Police & Fire Department as well as a number of commercial establishments. Farther along the road are the Briarcliff High School and Briarcliff Middle School, though they are not technically in the village. The elementary school, Todd School, is located on Ingham Road, which intersects with Pleasantville Road. Other Significant Areas

*Scarborough is a hamlet almost entirely in Briarcliff Manor along the Hudson River that has a post office and train station on the Metro North Hudson Line. This is not incorporated in Briarcliff's School District. During the early 20th century families such as the Vanderbilts, Astors, and Rockefellers entertained guests on their "country" estates with sweeping river views in the Scarborough area. Also in Scarborough is the Scarborough Presbyterian Church erected by Mrs. Elliott F. Shepard (a Vanderbilt) as a memorial to her late husband. Across the street from the large stone church is Sparta Cemetery, which contains the grave of "The Leather Man", subject of a Pearl Jam B-side of the same name.

*Chilmark is a residential community along with a shopping center that is on the northern end of Briarcliff. The shopping center includes a supermarket, Carvel ice cream store, Prescription Plus Pharmacy, Radio Shack, pizzeria, an independent video store, and other select stores. The name of the area comes from the castle-like Chilmark Mansion. Like Scarborough, Chilmark is not incorporated in Briarcliff's School District. Children from this neighborhood fall under the Ossining School District's jurisdiction.
* Both Chilmark and Scarborough enjoy the use of Briarcliff Manor Recreation.
