The first song Justin wrote was about a kid overdosing, and his second was about TV evangelists. Justin, as well as the other members of Anti-Flag, all follow the rationale of straight edgeFact|date=May 2008 but do not label themselves as such. This came about not from a religious stand point but rather from his younger years surrounded by drug use of his peers.

Career

In 1988, Justin Geever formed Anti-Flag with childhood friend Pat Thetic, [ [http://www.wiretapmag.org/stories/21879] // WireTap Magazine // Justin Sane's Military Free Zone] and bassist/vocalist Andy Flag. In 1996 they released their first album “Die for the Government." Later that year Andy Flag left the band as a result of personal disputes. Various band members came and went during '97 and '98, after which they finally settled on a permanent line-up consisting of Justin Sane as Guitarist/vocalist, Pat Thetic as the drummer, Chris Head as lead Guitarist/backing vocals, and finally Chris Barker (aka #2) as the bassist/second vocalist. [ [http://www.punkbands.com/interviews/284/] //Interview with Anti-Flag by Punkbands.com] 1998 was also the year the band released their second album “Their System Doesn't Work For You.” In 1999 Anti-Flag released their third album “A New Kind Of Army” and created their own label, A-F Records. In 2001 they signed to Fat Wreck Chords after discussions with Fat Mike on tour. [ [http://www.decapolis.com/musicreviews/interviews/anti.shtml] // NewsPro Archive // Anti-Flag - Justin Sane Interview] Following their switch to Fat Wreck Chords, the band released “Underground Network," the album considered by critics to be the one that launched Anti-Flag into unprecedented popularity. Mobilize was released the following year, as it was recorded in the wake of the September 11th attacks. [// "Mobilize" liner notes, written by Anti-Flag] They then released a split CD with Bouncing Souls in 2002. 2003 saw the release of The Terror State, produced by Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine. Anti-flag's first DVD “Death of a Nation” was released in 2004. The DVD includes footage of 23 songs performed at various venues across North America. It also contains three music videos, an interview with the band, behind-the-scenes tour footage, and three montages compiled by the band. [// "Death of a Nation" DVD liner notes] In 2006 they released “For Blood and Empire” on RCA Records. Many fans were skeptical of the band's decision to sign with a major label, though the album was well received. "The Bright Lights of America" was released in 2008. Justin stated in an interview that the band wanted to introduce new elements in this album. He is often mistaken for the former Avenged Sevenfold bassist "Justin Sane", who tried to commit suicide.
