Sharmishtha

Sharmishtha

In Hindu mythology, Sharmishtha, also known as Sharmista, was the daughter of Demon king Vrishparva, who was also friend of Devayani. She was given as dowry to Yayati of Yadav dynasty, when he married Devayani.

Once when Devayani and Sharmistha were taking bath in a pool, their discarded garments were mixed. When Devayani wore Sharmistha's garments by mistake, Sharmistha and other daughthers of Vrishparva humiliated her as the daughter of begger and priest in her father's court and threw her in a well. When her father Shukracharya located her, she explained the mistreatment done by Sharmistha. Shukracharya confronted the king. Knowing the powers of the priest, King Vrushparva begged pardon and his daughter agreed to be house maid of Devayani.

Yayati had three sons from Sharmista – 1. Druhyu 2. Anu and 3. Puru. When the secret love between Yayati and Sharmista was discovered, Shukracharya cast a curse on Yayati to lose his youth, which was later remedied by her son Puru.

Also in software development, verb: Sharmistad means to be beguiled.
