About

Southern Exposure (aka SoEx) is not-for-profit arts organization and alternative art space founded in 1974 in the Mission District of San Francisco, California.

SoEx supports emerging artists and youth in a dynamic environment in which they can develop and present new work and ideas. An active presence in the Bay Area for nearly 35 years, the organization evolves in response to the needs of artists and the community, engaging the public in the artists’ work.

Programs

Exhibitions

Southern Exposure's exhibition program is curated by a committee of artists from the community and include solo shows, group shows, and juried shows. Artists that have showed at Southern Exposure include Harrell Fletcher, Lee Walton, Glowlab, Neighborhood Public Radio, Packard Jennings, Amy Balkin, Red 76, Jon Rubin, Ann Chamberlain, David Ireland,Alex Kahn, Amy Franceschini, Michael Swaine, Christian Maychack, Scott Oliver, Stephanie Syjuco, and others. Each year, SoEx has a juried exhibition with an open call. The show is curated by a respected international curator (past curaotrs of the annual exhibition have included Magali Arriola [ [http://www.sfstation.com/epic-southern-exposures-14th-annual-juried-exhibition-a663 SF Station Review of 14th Annual Exhibition] ] , Tom Finkelpearl, and Kristan Kennedy [ [http://www.fecalface.com/calendar/calendar.php?mode=view&id=6248 FecalFace.com calendar] ] , There is no fee for artists to submit their work for review.

Artists in Education

The Artists in Education Program allows artists from the community to develop their own curriculum for local high-school age students. The workshops result in an exhibition of a collective project.

Grant Programs

SoEx provides small grants through their "Alternative Exposure Grant Program." In 2007 they provided fifteen $3,000 grants to San Francisco Bay Area visual artists and artist groups.

Public Art

Since moving from Project Artaud in 2006 [ [http://v1.soex.org/ SoEx site] "After 32 extraordinary years at our home at Project Artaud, we are temporarily moving to a wonderful storefront location in the Mission District while our space undergoes a seismic retrofit and renovation. We will be leaving our current space in late June 2006..."] , Southern Exposure has supported "offsite" projects which happen in the city of San Francisco. Public Programs

SoEx also organizes events, artist lectures, panels, screenings, and performances.
