The College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry,[1] one of the constituent colleges of the Central Agricultural University was established through the promulgation of an ordinance (No. M-2 of 1995; dated 20 February 1995) and became functional with the admission of first batch of students to B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree course in the year 1997. It is located near Aizawl in the state of Mizoram.

Dr. M.A. Ayub Shah (M.V.Sc., Ph.D.) is Dean of the faculty.

The college as a part of CAU-organised "North-East Agri Fair 2007-2008" and National Seminar on "Integrated Farming System relevant to North-East region"[1] in February 2008. The Department of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology & Obsterics of the College organized XXVII Annual Conference of ISSAR from September 27-2011.

Contents

Location

The college is in Selesih, North Aizawl, about 12 km from Aizawl, the capital city of Mizoram, on the Aizawl-Sihphir-Silchar sub-highway. The campus is spread over 168.61 acres (0.6823 km2) of land, mostly of hilly terrain at 965 meters the sea level. The climate of Aizawl is very pleasant, generally cool in summer and not very cold in winter. The minimum and maximum temperature ranges from 7o-80c to 30o-32oc . It rains heavily from May to September and the average annual rainfall is about 2,500 mm.

Jurisdiction

The jurisdiction of the College extends to different North Eastern Hill States including Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur.

Mandate

The mandates of the College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry are:

  1. To impart education in different branches of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry.
  2. To further the advancement of learning and prosecution of research on Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry.
  3. To undertake programmes of extension education in states under jurisdiction and
  4. To undertake such other activities as it may deem fit from time to time.

Teaching departments

As per the Veterinary Council of India’s Minimum Standards for Veterinary Education (Five Years B.V.Sc. & A.H. Degree Course) Regulations 2008 (implemented from the academic session 2009-10), the college has the following 17 teaching departments:

Veterinary Physiology & Biochemistry

The Biochemistry Unit imparts teaching and conducts research in comparative basic biochemistry (biochemical basis of the functions of cells, organs and tissues), cell biology, molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics and biotechnology and clinical biochemistry (application of biochemistry in clinical disease diagnosis) of animals and birds.

It offers courses spread in two academic years (three semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the first and third year of the degree programmes and offering M.V.Sc. degree programme from the acadmic session 2011-12. The Biochemistry unit is well equipped with facilities like HPLC system, thermocycler, electrophoresis system, CO2 incubator, gel-documentation system, biological safety cabinet, blood chemistry analyzer, blotting apparatus, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, flame photometer, high-speed refrigerated centrifuge and other basic biochemical and molecular biological tools.

Dr. M.Ayub Ali, PhD (Head and Associate Professor) and Dr. Kh Victoria Chanu, M.V.Sc. (Assistant Professor) are the faculties of Biochemistry Unit.

The Physiology Unit offers courses and conducts research in comparative physiology (functions of cells, organs and tissues) of different body systems of animals and birds and offers nine credit hour courses spread in two academic years (three semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the first two years of the degree programmes and also offers supporting courses to postgraduate (M.V.Sc. & Ph.D.) students.

Dr. M.C. Lallianchhunga, Assistant Professor, and Dr. (Mrs.) Prava Mayengbam, Assistant Professor, are the faculties of Physiology Unit.

Veterinary Anatomy & Histology

The departments deals with the teaching and research on comparative gross and microscopic structures of body parts, organs and tissues of different species of animals and birds and offers 13 credit hour courses spread in two academic years (four semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the first two years of the degree programmes and supporting courses to postgraduate M.V.Sc. students.

Animal Nutrition

The department deals with teaching and research on different areas of animal nutrition: nutritive values of feeds and fodder, nutritional requirements and computation of balance feeds for different species of animals and birds. The department offers nine credit hour courses spread in two academic years (three semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the first and second year of the degree programme. The department offers an M.V.Sc degree programme from the academic session 2007-08.

Livestock Production & Management

The department deals with husbandry, hygiene, housing and management practices of animals and birds. It offers 14 credit hour courses spread over two academic years (four semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the first and second year of the degree programmes. The department is recognized for postgraduate (M.V.Sc.) degree programmes from the academic session 2006-07. Besides teaching, the department is involved in research in livestock and poultry husbandry. The department offers M.V.Sc. degree programme from the academic year 2006-07.

Dr. (Mrs.) Lalnuntluangi Hmar, Associate Professor and Head, Dr. Girin Kalita, Assistant Professor, Dr. (Mrs.) Ranjana Goswami, Assistant Professor, and Dr. Prasanta Saikia, Assistant Professor are the faculties of the department.

Livestock Products Technology

The department covers the teaching of hygienic processing and value addition of meat and milk products. It offers six credit hour courses spread over two semesters during third year to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the third and fourth year of the degree programmes. The Department also offers M.V.Sc. degree programme from the academic session 2011-12. The department is undertaking research on value addition on meat and milk products.

Dr. (Mrs.) Pragati Hazarika, Assistant Professor and incharge, and Dr. K. Khate, Assistant Professor are the faculties of the department.

Animal Breeding & Genetics

The department deals with teaching and research on cytogenetics and population genetics and breeding of different species of animals and birds. It offers nine credit hour courses spread in two academic years (three semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the first and second year of the degree programme. The Department also offers M.V.Sc. dgree programme from the academic session 2011-12. The department emphasizes evolving new strains of animals suitable to agro-climatic conditions and socio-cultural requirements of NEH Region, conservation of important native germplasm and development of transgenic animals.

Veterinary Pathology

The Department deals with the teaching and research on gross and cellular structural changes in tissues, pathogenesis, diagnosis and prognosis of diseases of different species of animals and birds. It offers 12 credit hour courses spread in two academic years (four semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the second and third year of the degree programme. The Department offers M.V.Sc. degree programme from the academic session 2011-12.

Dr. T.K. Rajkhowa, Associate Professor and Head, Dr. Y. Damodar Singh, Assistant Professor, and Dr. R. Ravindran, Assistant Professor are the faculties of the department.

Veterinary Microbiology

The Department offers courses on different disease producing microbial pathogens viz. bacteria, viruses, fungi, rikettsiae, Chlamydia etc. affecting different species of animals and birds. The Department offers 10 Credit Hour Courses spread in two academic years (4 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the second and third year of the degree programme and is offering M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programmes from the academic session 2009-10 and 2011-12, respectively. Besides teaching, the Departments also undertakes research on various aspects of veterinary microbiology.

Veterinary Parasitology

The Department deals with the teaching and research on different disease-producing endo and ectoparasites of animals and birds and their prevention (prophylaxis) and offers 10 Credit Hour Courses spread in two academic years (2 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the second year of the degree programme and supporting postgraduate (M.V.Sc.) courses.

Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology

The Department deals with the teaching and research on drugs, sources (Pharmacognosy), mechanism of action (Pharmacodynamics), fate in the body (Pharmacokinetics), uses (Pharmacotherapy) and their harmful effect (toxicology) and offers 10 Credit Hour Courses spread in two academic years (4 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the third and fourth year of the degree programme. The department is working on many herbal and ethnoveterinary medicine in a systematic way and contributing in expansion of the knowledge in and around North eastern India. Department is well equipped. Notable facilities available in the Department include HPLC System (Waters), UV-VIS Spectrophotometer (Chemito), Flame Photometer (Systronics), Spectrofluorophotometer (Hitachi), Tail Flick Analgesiometer (Ugo Basile, Italy), Eddy's Hot Plate Analgesiometer (MAC), Actophotometer (Rolex), Rota-Rod Tread Mill (Rolex), Electroconvulsiometer (Rolex), Plethysmometer (Ugo Basile, Italy), Passive Avoidance Test Apparatus (Ugo Basile, Italy), Electrophysiograph (Medicaids) etc. The Department is a postgraduate Department and offering M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programmes from the academic session 2006-07 and 2011-12, respectively.

Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology

The Department undertakes teaching and research on milk and meat hygiene, diseases of public health and zoonotic importance and environmental hygiene and offers 6 Credit Hour Courses on Veterinary Public Health spread in two academic years (3 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the third and fourth year of the degree programme and is offering supporting courses to postgraduate (M.V.Sc.) students. The department offers M.V.Sc degree programme from the academic session 2007-08. The Department also offers a 3 credits course on Veterinary Epidemiology to final year BVSc & AH Students.

Veterinary Medicine

The Department deals with the teaching and research in different areas of veterinary medicine and offers 15 Credit Hour Courses spread in two academic years (2 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the fourth and fifth year of the degree programme. The Department is offering M.V.Sc. degree programmes.

Veterinary Surgery & Radiology

The Department undertakes teaching and research in veterinary anesthesiology, regional and operative surgery and radiology and offers 9 Credit Hour Courses spread in two academic years (3 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the fourth and fifth year of the degree programme. The Department is also offering the M.V.Sc degree programmes from the academic session 2006-07.

Animal Reproduction, Gynecology & Obstetrics

The Department offers courses on various aspects of gynecology, obstetrics, andrology and artificial insemination. The Department offers 7 Credit Hour Courses spread in two academic years (3 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the fourth and fifth year of the degree programme and supporting postgraduate courses to the M.V.Sc. students. The Department is actively engaged in research on different areas of animals reproduction.

Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension

The Department deals with the teaching and research on various aspects of sociology and principles of animal husbandry extension, livestock economics, marketing and business management and extension techniques in veterinary practice and production and offers 7 Credit Hours Courses spread in two academic years (3 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the third and fifth year of the degree programme. The Department is offering supporting postgraduate courses to the M.V.Sc. students. Apart from the above, the transfer of technology is also taken up through various means.

Teaching Veterinary Clinical Service Complex (TVCC)

Teaching Veterinary Clinical Service Complex (TVCC): The Department is a clinical teaching, training and service centre and deals with the clinical aspects of medicine, surgery and radiology and gynecology & obstetrics, to the students. The Department offers clinical oriented 18 Credit Hours Courses spread in two academic years (3 Semesters) to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. students during the fourth and fifth year of the degree programme. The Department is supporting clinical-based postgraduate courses to the M.V.Sc. students.

TVCC is manned by the faculties from the Departments of Medicine, Surgery & Radiology and Gynaecology & Obstetrics.

Instructional Livestock Farm Complex

The College has a well-developed Instructional Livestock Complex (ILFC)where different species of domestic animals abd birds are maintained for imparting training to the undergraduate and postgraduate students. The ILFC is attached to the Department of Livestock Production & Management. The ILFC offers 2 Credit hours (compulsory non-credit)spread in 2 semesters during the second year of the undergraduate programme.

The ILFC is monitored by the Livestock Farm Advisory Committee under collective responsibility of the Departments of Livestock Production & Management, Animal Nutrition and Animal Genetics & Breeding.

Facilities

All the departments have well-equipped laboratories with state-of-the-art facilities to impart best training to the undergraduate and post-graduate students and to conduct advanced researches in the fields of animal production, animal and poultry products, animal health care and extension activities. Further, all the teaching departments are staffed by highly qualified, young and dynamic faculties who are tirelessly addressing the mission and mandate of the university and the college to achieve the targeted goals.

Academic programmes

Undergraduate programmes

The College of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry, Central Agricultural University, Selesih has offered the degree course of Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) since its inception. The college is fully adopting the Veterinary Council of India’s Minimum Standards for Veterinary Education (five-years B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree course) Regulations-2008 with effect from the academic session 2009-10. The B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme is spread over 10 semesters covering 177 credit hours including six- month internship programmes.

At present, the total intake capacity is 67 students. However, the intake capacity may be increased further with the implementation of 27% reservation for OBC students.

Postgraduate programmes

The Academic Council and the Board of Management of Central Agricultural University, Imphal approved the introduction of Post-Graduate (two-ear M.V.Sc. degree) programmes under semester system of education in the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry from the academic session 2006-07 in three selected disciplines: Veterinary Pharmacology & Toxicology, Veterinary Surgery & Radiology and Livestock Production & Management with an intake capacity of 3 students in each discipline.

The first batch of post-graduate M.V.Sc. students were admitted from second semester of academic session 2006-07. From the academic session 2007-08, M.V.Sc. programmes in 3 more disciplines; Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Animal Nutrition and Veterinary Microbiology were introduced.

Currently (1011–12), the College is offering M.V.Sc. degree programme in 11 disciplines and Ph.D. programmes in 3 disciplines.

Admission

Undergraduate admission

Admissions are made on the basis of nominations of students through competitive entrance examinations conducted by different State Governments as per the number seats allocated to different NEH States. Apart from the seats allocated to the states, 15% of the seats are reserved for the candidates nominated by the Veterinary Council of India, New Delhi based on All-India Competitive Entrance Examination for admission to the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme.

Postgraduate admission

The postgraduate admission is based on all-India basis. However, preference is given to the students hailing from the North East region. Four students each including a nominee of ICAR, New Delhi are admitted in the two-year M.V.Sc. degree programme in the following disciplines.

Examination system

Undergraduate

The examinations for the B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree programme are conducted in two phases. Firstly, at the end of every semester there is an Internal Semester End-Term Examination, which is conducted by the Course Instructor. Secondly, at the end of each academic session (after completion of two semesters), External Annual Professional Composite Examinations are conducted. Both the Internal and External Composite Examinations carries equal weighting (50%) for declaring the results. The minimum pass marks is 50.0% separately in Theory as well as Practical Examinations. All students are required to maintain an attendance of 80% in both the theory and practical class for appearing in the Semester and Annual Composite Examinations.

Postgraduate

The examinations for M.V.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programmes consist of internal (50% in Theory; 30% in Practical) and external (50% in Theory; 70% in Practical) evaluations. To pass a course, a student has to score a minimum of 5.50 on a 10.0 point scale. To pass the degree programme, a student has to score an Overall Grade Point Average (OGPA) of 6.00 on a 10.0 point scale.
