Sel-12

Sel-12

Sel-12 is a gene and protein of the worm "Caenorhabditis elegans". It is a transmembrane protein and an ortholog of the protein presenilin in humans . It plays a role in the development of the worm's gonads ( vulva) (the worm is a hermaphrodite ). Some mutations in sel-12 cause an egg-laying defect. Sel-12 regulates the proteins lin-12 and glp-1 ( glucagon-like peptide-1 ) analogous to the notch-pathway. Sel-12 plays a role in thermotaxis ( the worm prefers a certain temperature and moves accordingly).
