Theodore I, Marquess of Montferrat

Theodore I, Marquess of Montferrat

Theodore I Palaiologos (c. 1270 – April 24, 1338) was Marquess of Montferrat from 1306 until his death.

He was a son of Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos and Yolande of Montferrat. After the male-line of the Aleramici marquesses of Montferrat went extinct in 1305, he inherited Montferrat. He disembarked in Genoa in 1306, slowly gaining the Montferrat territory contended by Manfred IV of Saluzzo, the Acaja family and King Charles II of Anjou. In 1310 he received the imperial investiture from emperor Henry VII.

In 1307 he married a Genoese lady, Argentina Spinola, daughter of the lord of that city, Opicino Spinola. They had two children, John (1313-1372) and Yolande (1318-1342), who married Aimone, Count of Savoy.

Theodore died at Trino Vercellese in 1338. He was succeeded by his son John II.
