The Superinteressante (a.k.a "Super" or "Super Interessante") is a Brazilian scientific and cultural magazine, known by its simple language focusing on the general public. Its name is equivalent to "Super-Interesting", in English. It is monthly published since September of 1987 by Editora Abril and its main competitor is the "Galileu Magazine", published by Editora Globo.

History

In 1987, the Editora Abril bought the copyrights of the Spanish magazine "Muy Interesante" to only "export" its reportings to Brazil, making the translation. But the magazine's team discovered that the European impression machines weren't adequate to fit the Brazilian printing standard, so they decided to make their own articles. Nowadays, it's Superinteressante that sells its articles to other magazines.

The magazine first publishing was in a little magazine with less than twenty pages (called "Edition 0"), with low importance to the main magazine, that was sold as a gift with other magazines. The first edition had a magazine's normal size and was about superconductivity and was a huge success and sold out in two weeks.

Nowadays, the magazine is the most influential (in Brazil) of its gender, with its own website, DVDs and a subdivision magazine called "Mundo Estranho".

Main Topics

These are the sections in Superinteressante nowadays:
*Unburdening: letter from the readers;
*Now, Listen: the editor's answer for the letters;
*Super Interview: interview of scientists, religious leaders and other people that are ascending in their respective careers;
*Essential: small reportings;
*Supernews: short and simple curiosities about science;
**"Mad Science": a hilarious column talking about useless scientific discoveries;
**"SuperPôster": a huge poster (in general with two pages and rarelly more than that) giving information about pop symbols, like "The Simpsons" or "Star Wars";
**"Connections": it makes a connection between two completely different subjects in five parts;
*Super-Answers: answers to questions made by the readers;
**"Who Was...?": a biography of a not very notorious person in History;
**"Surreal": create and answer hypothesis like "And if Hitler had won the II Worldly War?" or "And If the Moon had never existed?";
*Super-Cult: cultural novelties;
*Retrô: about nostalgia (old movies, toys and etc.);
*Super-Manual: "Survivor's Guide" is its second title. Explains how to survive from weird events;
*Zoom: incredible pictures of one subject, mixing art with science.

Rivalries

The scientific magazine's market in Brazil is not too competitive, but the "Super" has got two main competitors previously mentioned in this article:
*Galileu magazine: the official name is only "Revista Galileu", but it's also known as "Galileu" only. It was first published in 1991 by Editora Globo with the name "Globo Ciência".
*Scientific American Brasil: it is the Brazilian version from the wordly influent "Scientific American".

Mundo Estranho Magazine

Mundo Estranho is the main subdivision of "Super", considered as a half-independent magazine, with a circulation over than 130,000 magazines. Its name is equivalent to "Strange World", in English. The Mundo Estranho magazine focuses its articles on curiosities about any subject and its main readers are teenagers. It is one of the most read "teenager's magazine", having own subdivisions:
*ME Hot: abbreviation for "Mundo Estranho Hot", is a sexual curiosities' magazine;
*TV Mundo Estranho: a TV program.

Other Subdivisions

Here is a list of other subdivisions of "Super":
*Adventures in History: is a history magazine, largely "copied" by "Super" competitors;
*Simple Life: it focuses in philosophy derivated from the oriental hemisphere.
