Prove It was the seventh track from Television's 1977 album Marquee Moon. It was released as a single with "Venus" on the B-side and became the most successful of their three hit singles in the UK. Despite entering at a (then) relatively high position of #28, it only got up to #25 and dropped out of the Top 40 after another week at #29.

Like its preceding single, "Prove It" was a staple of Television's early live shows, but is a much slower song than "Marquee Moon" and has a much simpler guitar intro. Verlaine's voice is also quite different, especially in the chorus where the song's title is delivered in an abrupt, almost spoken manner. There is one solo, performed by Verlaine after the second chorus before a third verse and chorus and then an outro after which Verlaine sings the finale "this case is closed". The lyrics, reflecting upon a detective story, echo the movie "The Long Goodbye" which came out a few years before "Marquee Moon".

Live, "Prove It" would often be a set closer for Television and Tom Verlaine.

Although the song has never been covered on record, the riff of "Prove It" was used by X as the basis for their song "Adult Books" on their 1981 album "Wild Gift".
