The College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS) is one of seventeen colleges and professional schools at the University of Minnesota. CFANS is focused on helping people solve everyday problems through science. The college offers 13 majors, 3 pre-major and pre-professional majors and 22 freestanding minors.

History

The college was formed on July 1, 2006, with the merger of two former colleges; the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences, and the College of Natural Resources, as well as the Department of Food Science and Nutrition. However, the origins of the college's programs extend back to 1869.

The College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences comprises six divisions, twelve academic units (two are held jointly), seven research and outreach centers throughout Minnesota, the Bell Museum of Natural History and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

Majors/Minors

As of fall 2007 the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences had an enrollment of 1,800 students in 13 majors and 22 minors. 259 faculty in 12 academic departments and 7 research centers around the state provide teaching, research and extension to students and constituents.

Majors- CFANS offers interdisciplinary majors that focus on practical applications which can enable students to successfully create, apply, and interpret new ideas. Majors offered by CFANS:

Pre-Majors- A pre-major is an undergraduate course of study that specifically prepares students to pursue and upper-division degree program in another college. CFANS offers one major program:

Pre-Professional Programs- Pre-professional Programs are specifically designed to meet the entrance requirements to professional programs such as veterinary medicine, medicine and dentistry. CFANS offers these pre-professional program options:

Minors- CFANS offers 22 freestanding minors to supplement the coursework done by students in their major program. Minors in CFANS are open to students throughout the entire University and these minors are an excellent way to further focus the studies in a related area of interest for the students. Student life

St. Paul Campus is home to one residence hall, Bailey Hall. Bailey Hall consists of 505 residents that are often students of CFANS. Bailey Hall offers living and learning communities that group residence by floors and are geared towards bringing students of similar majors together so that they can get the most out of their studies at the University of Minnesota. Communities found in Bailey Hall geared towards CFANS students include: The Environment House, Pre-Veterinary Science and St. Paul Leaders and Scholars.

Bailey Hall is conveniently attached to the St. Paul Campus Student Center which contains a movie theater and eight lanes of bowling, pool tables and arcade games located in the Gopher Spot. The student center also has great places to eat and hosts Gophers After Dark on the weekends.

One thing unique to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences is that the college sponsors a 'Senior Salute' held at the end of each spring semester for all graduating CFANS students. The evening consists of a boat ride with food and prizes for the seniors.

Extension Service

The University of Minnesota Extension makes connection between Minnesota trends and University of Minnesota Expertise in the three areas of community development and vitality; land, food and environment; and youth development and family living. The University of Minnesota Extension is committed to delivering high-quality, relevant educational programs and information to Minnesota and communities.

Affiliations

The Bell Museum of Natural History is a portal to experiences that bring people closer to the natural world. It is a small, personable place with big ideas, an historic state treasure, and a landmark destination. It is a familiar point-of-entry to the resources of the University of Minnesota and a gateway to the natural wonders of our state. The Bell Museum serves young and old alike as they seek to find—and better understand and appreciate—their own place in a living, changing world.

The Bell Museum of Natural History is open to the public and classrooms for tours Tuesday through Sunday.

The James Ford Bell Museum of Natural History was established by state legislative mandate in 1872 to collect, preserve, skillfully prepare, display, and interpret our state's diverse animal and plant life for scholarly research and teaching and for public appreciation, enrichment, and enjoyment. Its governance belongs, by state legislative designation, to the University of Minnesota. The Bell Museum operates independently as a unit of CFANS.

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum features more than 1,000 acres (4.0 km2) of magnificent gardens, model landscapes, and natural areas-from woodlands and wetlands to prairie-with extensive collections of northern-hardy plants. Tour the Arboretum on 12.5 miles (20.1 km) of garden paths and hiking trails. Walk the close gardens and bike, walk or drive Three-Mile Drive to see more gardens and collections.

The University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is part of the Department of Horticultural Science within the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences at the University of Minnesota. Our mission is to provide a community and national resource for horticultural and environmental information, research and public education; to develop and evaluate plants and horticultural practices for cold climates; and to inspire and delight all visitors with quality plants in well-designed and maintained displays, collections, model landscapes, and conservation areas.
