Government of Singapore

Government of Singapore

The Government of Singapore is formed by the political party which gains a simple majority in the general elections held in Singapore at least once every five years. It is part of Singapore's political system and supported by the Singapore Civil Service. Transparency International ranked it 4th (of 179) in the world on the corruption perceptions index in 2007, with only 0.1 points behind the 3 nations tying for 1st place [http://www.transparency.org/policy_research/surveys_indices/cpi/2007] . This would indicate a very low overall domestic corruption. However, the government has received significant criticism for electoral intimidation. However,it can be noted that the government (which is the political party known as the PAP, or People's Action Party.)is generally incorrupt, helping to maintain prosperity and low crime rates.

The government of Singapore has been chosen by election since 1959 elections, when Singapore achieved self-governance. Before then, the government was mainly either a colonial administration solely or a mixture of colonial rule and a partially-elected assembly, such as the Legislative Council. The People's Action Party has formed government in every election since 1959.
