Anna Williams is a fictional character featured in the "Tekken" fighting game series. With a flirtatious demeanour and seductive laugh, she is something of a femme fatale. As a child, she loved her father as much as her sister, Nina, did, but Anna didn't get as much attention from him. Therefore, she was closer to her mother, a female national Aikido champion. Because of this, her fighting style leans more towards her mother's Aikido style than her father's assassin Bone Martial Arts. Anna has a memorable sibling rivalry and a somewhat love-hate relationship with her older sister, Nina, which spawned from the death of their father, Richard Williams. She is also the aunt of Steve Fox but is unaware of her relation to him. Despite being Irish, she, like Nina, has an American accent instead of an Irish one.

History

Tekken 1

Anna was featured in Nina's Arcade mode ending, in which she accuses Nina of stealing one of her shoes (See Nina's Tekken ending). She was also featured as Nina's sub-boss in Tekken, but did not become a usable character until the console version of the game. Anna, like all of the other sub-bosses in the first Tekken game, was not given an ending.

Tekken 2

As in the first tournament, Nina was once again hired to assassinate the sponsor of the current tournament, Kazuya Mishima. Whether at Kazuya's discretion or Anna's own volition, Anna became a bodyguard for Kazuya, along with Ganryu and Bruce Irvin, who were all charged with Kazuya's protection. It is likely that Anna's intervention prevented her sister from carrying out her contract, and Nina was later captured by Mishima Zaibatsu forces and used in Doctor Boskonovitch's cryonics ('cold-sleep') research. Learning about this, Anna volunteered to be another test subject, requesting that she be woken in the future at the same time as Nina. Her reasons for doing so remain ambiguous, though the game suggests that Anna would have felt lonely without Nina and/or jealous at the thought of her sister's youth being preserved.

Tekken 3

After being placed in suspended animation during the second tournament, Nina was awoken 19 years later by the influence of the recently excavated Ogre, who compelled her to assassinate Jin Kazama. As per her request, Anna was awoken at the same time as her sister, though she was unaffected by Ogre's influence. Nina also began to suffer ill effects from the 'cold-sleep', resulting in long term memory loss. In an act of compassion, Anna set out to stop Nina from once again becoming an assassin, and to help her recover her memory loss.

NOTE: Anna only appears as a playable character in the console release of Tekken 3. In the arcade version, she was an alternate costume for Nina, and therefore had the same moves as her.

Tekken 4

In "Tekken 4", Anna is mysteriously and inexplicably absent, though she is mentioned in Nina's "Tekken 4" prologue and returns in "Tekken 5".

Tekken 5

Nina decides to make contact with Anna in hopes of restoring her memory. Unfortunately, their meeting triggers Nina's lost feelings of hostility towards her sister, and she immediately opens fire. Anna retaliates, and the reunion descends into a gunfight which lasts for days. The sisters eventually reach a stalemate and agree to settle things for good at "The King of Iron Fist Tournament 5". A portion of their gunfight can be seen in the introductory sequence of the game.

Tekken 6

After being defeated by her sister Nina, Anna seeks revenge. However, Nina has already gone into hiding. Anna hears rumors she has became Jin Kazama's new bodyguard, thus being involved with the Mishima Zaibatsu, so Anna decides to join forces with G Corporation.

Death by Degrees

Anna appears in Nina's spinoff game, Death by Degrees. In Death by Degrees, Anna is a member of the Tekken Force. Like in the Tekken games, Anna fights using her fists and her feet. Nina first encounters Anna when she is walking across an old bridge with Lukas Hayes. When Lukas opens the door, he is shocked to see Anna. Anna kicks him onto the bridge, and he falls through it. Then, she challenges Nina to a fight. Nina must defeat Anna while being careful to not fall through the bridge. The bridge breaks through on certain occasions, like when one of the two gets knocked down onto the bridge. Each section usually takes about three "hits" for it to break. After Nina wins, Type J is shown watching the two fight. It jumps onto the bridge, and it predictably goes right through it. Anna goes down with it. Nina remains on the part of the bridge that didn't cave in. It is revealed that Lukas got caught in some ropes, which saved his life. Then, Anna falls onto him. They both fall and land on sandbags. Anna runs away while Type J targets Lukas. Near the end of the game, when Nina is trying to escape the Amphitrite, which is about to blow up due to a self-destruct feature being activated. While Nina tries to grab onto the ladder that a helicopter above deployed, Anna kicks Nina. Then, Anna challenges Nina to a fight once again. Nina must fight Anna while avoiding barrels that are on fire that are coming towards them and the water below. There are two cutscenes that show Nina and Anna fighting during this fight. After Nina wins the fight, Anna almost falls into the water below. Nina grabs her hand, and then she reminisces about when her father, Richard Williams, and others were killed with gunfire, and Anna comforted her afterwards. Nina pulls Anna up, and another explosion almost sends them both into the water. However, Anna jumps and grabs the helicopter's ladder with one of her hands, while holding Nina's hand with her other hand. As they fly away, the Amphitrite explodes. When Anna sees some boats, Anna smiles and says, "Now we're even, sis." She lets go of Nina's hand, and Nina falls into the water. The boats approach Nina as Anna flies away on the helicopter. Once the game is completed, Anna becomes a playable character in her own mini-game, "Anna Mode."

Endings

Tekken 2:After competing in the King of Iron Fist Tournament 2, Anna goes back home to Ireland, where she is seen taking a shower. However, as soon as she steps out of the cubicle, naked, Nina (who was lurking nearby) steps out in front of Anna. With Nina raising a camera in front of her, a startled Anna can only watch as the flash goes off. Nina holds up the Polaroid picture and waves it at her sister. However, it reveals that Anna was able to maintain some of her dignity by covering herself with her arms.

Tekken 3

*"Note: Two versions of this ending exist; one for the Japanese and European versions of the game, and another that was used in the American release."

:Japanese/European Version: Nina and Anna relax by the beach. A group of men begin to flirt with the sisters. While Nina appears to ignore their advances, she glances towards Anna, who is talking animatedly with two of them. A third man tries to pull Nina from her sun lounger, but she instead pulls her arm from his grip and walks up behind her distracted sister. Nina quickly unclasps the upper half of Anna's bikini, which flies off and leaves her looking mortified. While Anna tries, in a panic, to cover herself, Nina saunters off towards the camera, looking satisfied.

:Edited Version: The sisters are once again seen relaxing in the sun. The ending proceeds similarly to the Japanese version, but after Anna is seen conversing with the men, she simply walks off, with them in tow, leaving a lonely Nina.

Tekken Tag Tournament

:Anna Williams and Nina Williams are having a conversation in an area that looks similar to Nina Williams' first "Tekken Tag Tournament" arena. Suddenly, Anna holds out one of her arms for a handshake. Nina sighs and grabs Anna's hand. Instead of them shaking hands, Nina twists Anna's arm. A closeup of Anna's face while she's screaming in agony is shown before this ending video ends.

Tekken 5

:Nina and Anna are hired to take part in a big Hollywood movie. They have a short, sword fighting sequence on a rooftop before facing off for the final blow. Lightening flashes and the sisters slice past one another. After a few seconds Nina emerges as the victor as Anna collapses to the ground. The director yells "Cut!" before beginning to complain that Nina and Anna aren't following the script. As he berates Nina, her armour begins to fall apart leaving her almost nude, and she desperately tries to hold it together. Anna rises from the ground and begins to giggle at Nina's humiliation. In a separate ending Nina falls to the ground & Anna gains recognition for her performance. Nina is seen walking off from the castle where it's being shot, pulling out a remote & after pressing a button the castle blows up.

Since in-game dialog was introduced in Tekken 4, neither Nina or Anna have spoken with Irish accents. They instead speak in American accents.

Also the opening music played is the same music played in Raphael Sorel's ending in "Soulcalibur III".

Fighting style

Anna is trained in bone breaking martial arts (koppou) and aikido (same as Nina) and she shares some similar moves with Nina. They both are the 'string' characters in Tekken who are able to force the foe to block quickly recovering moves in series to their advantages. Anna is known for her 'full crouch' moves mix-up, strong low-typed attacks and easy; heavy wall damages. Players however, notice her poor tracking and slow 'punishment' moves.

It should be noted that Anna's grappling moves have changed over the series, reflecting less of her bone breaking martial arts. Moves reversal, a significant part of aikido seems lackluster to her gameplay.

Outfits

Anna is most notable for the stylish outfits she wears in matches. Usually, she's shown wearing a modified silk qipao/cheongsam with matching gloves and shoes, and she keeps her hair well-coiffed and cut to the neckline. She is often among the few characters who are given a third outfit option, as opposed to the standard two.
