Warren is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 873 at the 2000 census. Home to Davis-White State Forest, Warren includes the village of Glencliff.

History

Warren was granted in 1764 by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth, and incorporated in 1770 by Governor John Wentworth. It takes its name from Admiral Sir Peter Warren.

The town's most famous landmark is a ballistic missile incongruously erected in the center of the village green. This was donated in honor of long-time Senator Norris Cotton, a Warren native. The missile was donated by Henry T. Asselin, who brought the missile to Warren from the Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville, Alabama in 1971. From 1909 until 1970, Glencliff was home to the New Hampshire State Sanatorium, located at an elevation of convert|1650|ft|m|lk=on on the slopes of Mount Moosilauke. Before the discovery of antibiotics, pure mountain air was thought to be curative for patients with tuberculosis. With its own farm on convert|500|acre|ha|lk=on, the facility would treat more than 4,000 individuals over its first half century, admitting between 50 and 100 per year. Many came from the industrial cities of southern New Hampshire such as Concord, Manchester and Nashua. It is now the Glencliff Home for the Elderly.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of convert|49.0|sqmi|km2|lk=on, of which convert|48.7|sqmi|km2|abbr=on is land and convert|0.4|sqmi|km2|abbr=on is water, comprising 0.80% of the town. Warren is drained by the Baker River. The highest point in Warren is at the southern boundary of the town, on the north ridge of Carr Mountain, where the elevation reaches approximately convert|3330|ft|m|lk=on above sea level.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 873 people, 355 households, and 227 families residing in the town. The population density was 17.9 people per square mile (6.9/km²). There were 506 housing units at an average density of 10.4/sq mi (4.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.11% White, 0.11% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.80% Asian, and 2.75% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.11% of the population.

There were 355 households out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.8% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $34,432, and the median income for a family was $38,125. Males had a median income of $29,625 versus $22,163 for females. The per capita income for the town was $16,454. About 5.1% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.0% of those under age 18 and 7.1% of those age 65 or over.
