I Stand Here Ironing

"I Stand Here Ironing" is a short story by Tillie Olsen. It was published in her short story collection "Tell Me a Riddle" in 1961. The narrator, a single mother of several children, remembers the way she parented her first two children. Her thoughts, and the story, are about what she would have done differently while parenting her first child. It is one of Olsen's most anthologized works.

The story is set in the late 1950s or early 1960s in the working class home of the narrator.

Characters:
*Emily – A nineteen-year old shy and passive girl. She is the older of two girls. Emily is a very innocent girl. She developed a talent for comedic acting.
*Emily's Father – deserted the family less than one year after her birth.
