Madrid is a village in Perkins County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 265 at the 2000 census. It is pronounced "MADD-ridd," rather than the more familiar "Muh-DRIDD" in Spain.

Geography

Madrid is located at 40°50′55″N 101°32′30″W / 40.84861°N 101.54167°W / 40.84861; -101.54167 (40.848611, -101.541661)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2), all of it land.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 265 people, 104 households, and 71 families residing in the village. The population density was 637.9 people per square mile (243.6/km²). There were 120 housing units at an average density of 288.9 per square mile (110.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.36% White, 0.38% Native American, 2.26% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.17% of the population.

There were 104 households out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.5% were married couples living together, 5.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the village the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 22.3% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 107.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.9 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $35,536, and the median income for a family was $42,000. Males had a median income of $30,313 versus $21,964 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,607. About 5.0% of families and 11.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.1% of those under the age of eighteen and 21.4% of those sixty five or over.
