The five City Loop stations (Flinders Street, Southern Cross (formerly Spencer Street), Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, and Parliament) are all premium stations. Other stations are assigned premium status based mainly on their level of patronage. There are currently 71 premium stations, [cite web

Future Premium stations

In 2006 the Meeting Our Transport Challenges plan listed plans to upgrade seven stations on Melbourne's railway network to Premium status during 2007 - 2009. Five stations have already been upgraded (Darling, Mentone, Upfield, Watsonia and Bell) while two more (Burnley and Nunawading) will be upgraded in the near future.
