History

Founded in 1964 as the School of Architecture, the college remains the only accredited architecture school in the state of Kentucky. In 1970, the College of Architecture was established, and in 2003, the College of Architecture merged with the School of Interior Design and the Department of Historic Preservation to become the College of Design.[1]

The college is known for hiring young and innovative faculty, a tradition that continues today.

The college's main facilities are housed in historic Pence Hall, built in 1909.[2] Additional studio and administrative spaces are located in Miller Hall, Bowman Hall, and the Funkhouser Building.

Deans

José Oubrerie, an associate of Le Corbusier was dean of the School of Architecture, from 1987 - 1992. Oubrerie is most recently noted for carrying out the design of Le Corbusier's Firminy Church, completed in 2006.[3]

The most recent dean of the college, David Mohney, co-author of the book Seaside:Making a Town in America, resigned from his position as dean after 13 years in 2007. The school's interim dean is David Biagi, director of the college's School of Architecture.

As of December 14, 2007, Michael Speaks, former director of the graduate program at SCI-Arc, has accepted the position as the next dean of the College of Design, effective February 2008.

Notable graduates

Graduates have worked in the offices of Morphosis, Daniel Libeskind, SHoP, Rem Koolhaas (OMA), REX, Reiser + Umemoto, Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates, and other leading architects.

Future

The College of Design is currently a leader in President Lee Todd's "Top 20 by 2020" plan. Lee's plan to further the University of Kentucky into a top 20 research institution by 2020 was featured in the New York Times in August 2007.

A proposal for an addition to the iconic Pence Hall, designed by Studio Gang Architects, is expected to be unveiled later this year.
