Strain theory can refer to;

In chemistry:
*Baeyer strain theory, a principle in chemistry.

In social sciences:
*In criminology and the sociology of deviance, the strain theories are related to the concept of Anomie. Strain appears when society emphasizes too much on the success goal and too little on the legitimate means for achieving the goal, and adapting to society.
*In the study of collective behaviour, to the Value-added theory of Neil Smelser
