Lilpop (Family)

Lilpop (Family)

The Lilpop family was a well-known dynasty of artisans and industrialists from Warsaw, Poland.

The ancestor of the Polish branch of the family was "Anton Augustin Lilpop" from Graz in Austria, (1742 - 1815), who, escaping religious persecution of the Protestants in Catholic Austria, settled down in Warsaw during the last years of the reign of King Augustus III of Poland and founded a watchmaking firm in 1789. The firm existed until 1939, when it was destroyed by German bombs.

Most known descendants of the family were:
*Stanisław Lilpop (1817 - (1866), mechanical engineer, inventor, founder of Poland's greatest machine factory "Lilpop, Rau & Loewenstein" in Warsaw;
*Ludwik F.M. Lilpop, (1845 - 1905), watchmaker and philanthropist, president of the parish council of Lutheran Church in Warsaw;
*Edward August Lilpop (1844 - 1911), Warsaw architect;
*Stefan Ludwik Lilpop (1872 - 1923), watchmaker, collector, patron of art and theatre.

Almost all Lilpops are buried at the Lutheran Cemetery in Warsaw.
