Rocheport is a city in Boone County,
Missouri, United States. It is part of the Columbia, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 208 at the 2000 census.
Rocheport was a trading post for both settlers and Native Americans. After the purchase of the
Louisiana Territoryin 1803, President Thomas Jeffersoncommissioned Meriwether Lewisand William Clarkto lead an expedition to explore the western territories. On June 7, 1804, their journey lead them to the convergence of the Missouri Riverand Moniteau Creek near the future settlement of Rocheport. Clark noted the features of the land, flora, fauna and native pictographs on the bluffs in his journal. Rocheport became a permanent settlement in the early nineteenth century.
Rocheport is located at coor dms|38|58|46|N|92|33|44|W|city (38.979488, -92.562355)GR|1. According to the
United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²), all of it land.
As of the
censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 208 people, 101 households, and 55 families residing in the city. The population densitywas 774.7 people per square mile (297.4/km²). There were 122 housing units at an average density of 454.4/sq mi (174.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.94% White, 3.37% African American, 1.44% Native American, 1.44% Asian, 0.48% from other races, and 4.33% from two or more races.
There were 101 households out of which 20.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were married couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.6% were non-families. 37.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.06 and the average family size was 2.73.
In the city the population was spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 80.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,188, and the median income for a family was $45,156. Males had a median income of $30,625 versus $20,313 for females. The
per capita incomefor the city was $21,483. About 3.5% of families and 4.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of eighteen and 7.0% of those sixty five or over.
Rocheport offers a variety of shops, art galleries, restaurants and outdoor activities. Rocheport is near the middle of the Katy Trail, a 225-mile-long bike path stretching across the state of Missouri.
