Lamar is a city in Barton County,
Missouri, United States. The population was 4,425 at the 2000 census. It is the county seatof Barton CountyGR|6. Lamar is well known as the birthplace of President Harry S. Truman.
Lamar is located at coor dms|37|29|37|N|94|16|20|W|city (37.493676, -94.272111)GR|1. According to the
United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.8 km²), of which, 3.8 square miles (9.9 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (7.25%) is water.
As of the
censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,425 people, 1,835 households, and 1,154 families residing in the city. The population densitywas 1,154.5 people per square mile (446.1/km²). There were 1,995 housing units at an average density of 520.5/sq mi (201.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.61% White, 0.18% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population.
There were 1,835 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 33.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.6% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $29,296, and the median income for a family was $38,007. Males had a median income of $26,375 versus $20,688 for females. The
per capita incomefor the city was $15,684. About 9.7% of families and 12.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.0% of those under age 18 and 17.2% of those age 65 or over.
