North Carrollton is a town in Carroll County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 499 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenwood, Mississippi micropolitan area

Geography

North Carrollton is located at 33°31′5″N 89°55′12″W / 33.51806°N 89.92°W / 33.51806; -89.92 (33.518154, -89.919931)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.78 km2), all of it land.

North Carrollton borders with the town of Carrollton, MS. Many residents of Carrollton and North Carrollton consider both towns a single entity, simply referred to as Carrollton.[2]

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 499 people, 226 households, and 153 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,599.3 people per square mile (621.5/km²). There were 253 housing units at an average density of 810.9 per square mile (315.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 56.51% White, 42.89% African American, and 0.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.

There were 226 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.6% were married couples living together, 22.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.9% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.21 and the average family size was 2.71.

In the town the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 21.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 79.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 69.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $19,659, and the median income for a family was $23,333. Males had a median income of $24,688 versus $17,361 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,454. About 28.0% of families and 33.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 52.0% of those under age 18 and 30.5% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The town of North Carrollton is served by the Carroll County School District and private school Carroll Academy.
