Raoul Bensaude

Raoul Bensaude

Raoul Bensaude (1866 - October 25, 1938) was a French physician who practiced medicine in Paris. He is known for his work with Emile Charles Achard (1860-1944) involving the description of paratyphoid fever and isolation of the bacillus, "Salmonella paratyphi B". With Pierre-Emile Launois (1856-1914) he described a rare form of obesity characterized by accumulation and progressive enlargement of fat underneath the skin of the upper trunk, neck, arms and legs. The two doctors documented their findings in a 1898 treatise named "De l’adénolipomatose symétrique". This condition is known today as multiple symmetrical lipomatosis or as the "Launois-Bensaude Syndrome". Bensaude made contributions in the field of gastroenterology, and was a pioneer in French proctology. He is credited popularizing sclerotherapy for treatment of hemorrhoids, and also has a model of rectoscope named after him.
