Awbere

Awbere is a town in eastern Ethiopia. It is located in the Jijiga Zone of the Somali Region, seven kilometers from Fugnan Bira in the neighboring Oromia Region. Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, Awbere has an estimated total population of 35,977, of whom 18,978 were males and 16,999 were females. [ [http://www.csa.gov.et/text_files/2005_national_statistics.htm CSA 2005 National Statistics] , Table B.4] It is one of two towns in Awbere woreda.

The Italian "Giuda" described Awbere in 1938 as Somali village with about 1000 inhabitants, whose houses were partly built of masonry, and possessing a mosque; a little to the west of the village was the tomb of Shek Barek. [Cited in "Local History in Ethiopia"]
