Roadwater is a linear village, the Northern section of which follows the course of the River Washford, in deep wooded valley. It has links with the West Somerset Mineral Railway, which transported iron ore in the 19th century from the Brendon Hills to Watchet on the coast.

Roadwater was noted in C18 and C19 for the large number of mills set beside the Washford River. Manor Mills survives and has been designated by English Heritage as a grade II listed building. More recent history is demonstrated in the restoration of a World War II pillbox. [cite web |url=http://www.exmoor-nationalpark.gov.uk/index/news_static/2006_nov_6.htm |title=Roadwater Pillbox |accessdate=2007-11-18 |format= |work=Exmoor National Park ]
