Stump Cross Caverns

Stump Cross Caverns

Stump Cross Caverns is a limestone cave system between Wharfedale and Nidderdale in North Yorkshire, England.

The caves were discovered in 1860 by miners prospecting for lead seams in the Yorkshire Dales. The caves have been open to the public for many years, although the cave system is much more extensive than the show caves, extending more than 6 km.

World record

Geoff Workman set the world record for the longest time spent underground, at Stump Cross Caverns in 1963. He spent 105 days underground as part of an investigation into the effect on the body of deprivation of the day and night cycle.
