Myrmecological News is an independent, international, non-profit, scientific journal devoted to ant research. In a mix of research and review articles, all fields of myrmecology are covered. Manuscripts are reviewed by at least two independent expert referees prior to acceptance. Turn-around times are brief (for volume 11, primary editorial decisions based on peer reviews were made after 30.7 days on average).

Recent developments

* Web of Science evaluation started in August 2008.–Volume 11 ist the first of the three consecutive volumes evaluated for inclusion in the Web of Science. An inclusion will increase the accessibility of articles and will continue to signal the quality of science published to the entire community.
* Volume 11 published in print (21 August 2008).
* Subscription of online version is up.–Myrmecological News offers free viewing of the non-printable PDF files of all articles online, but to obtain access to the printable PDF files of all articles, subscription is necessary. By subscribing the online version users obtain access to the printable PDF files of all articles of all volumes online.
* Sign-up system for Email-alert is up.–An online form is accessible through the journal’s homepage. To receive an E-mail whenever new articles are published Online-Earlier or print volumes are out, it suffices to provide an E-mail address online.
* Online-Earlier is up.–Since May 2008 Myrmecological News offers an Online-Earlier publication service: fully edited and proof-read articles are published online as soon as they are ready. Articles published Online-Earlier will not be changed after their online publication and will be printed identically. Under the current version of the ICZN, online publications per se are not taxonomically significant and authors of publications that ensue changes of zoological nomenclature will thus be able to opt for holding back the online publication of their contributions until the date of the print publication.
* All back volumes (starting from volume 1, 1995) now online as pdf files.
* Extended Advisory Board.–Myrmecological News now has a total of fifteen eminent scientists from all continents that span practically all subfields of myrmecology "on board".
* Scope now covers all biogeographic zones.–Myrmecological News now accepts manuscripts on any ant topic from any part of the globe. Unfortunately, page charges still apply as sales of Myrmecological News do not cover the production costs, even though all editorial work is performed honorarily. The publisher, the Austrian Society of Entomofaunistics (ÖGEF), can sponsor articles which deal with the Palaearctic Region or with general myrmecological aspects, but due to their statutes cannot extend sponsoring to other faunal regions. However, all students and any authors from developing countries can apply for exemption from page charges.

Scheduled developments

* A series of review articles, intended to build up a collection of standard references in a variety of myrmecological subdisciplines and launched in volume 11, will be ongoing and eventually will also include reviews focusing on major ant life history strategies, thus after nearly two decades taking up the thread laid by Hölldobler and Wilson's milestone book "The Ants". In these, Myrmecological News will encourage interdisciplinary approaches, considering core questions in ant biology through the powerful combination of traditional and cutting-edge technologies.
* Under the current version of the ICZN, Online Earlier publications are not taxonomically recognised. Hence, to avoid confusion, articles which propose changes of zoological nomenclature are only published online after publication of the print version. Despite that, Myrmecological News is a platform for ant taxonomy and aims, also through the recent streamlining of its web facilities, to help overcoming the taxonomic impediment. Submission of taxonomic papers is strongly encouraged.
