Admissions

Like all schools in Salford LEA, it is for ages 11–16 with no sixth form, because it is state run there is no exam to pass to gain entry into the school, local pupils are automatically placed into the nearest high school. However if they wish to attend a certain high school they must complete the relevant forms and send them to Moorside High as early as they can before the following academic year as places at the school are limited to 1050. As of 2010 the school has 800 pupils attending. Morside Primary School is the main feeder school locally with St Peter's C of E Primary School also being a feeder school in the area.

History

Arson

The school suffered an arson attack in July 2002, in which thirty pupils needed hospital treatment.[1]

Special Status

In 2008 the school was granted special status in Mathematics and Computing.[2] The school continues to improve in all aspects of the curriculum.

Planned merger

Under the original Labour Government planned to have The Swinton High School and Moorside High School demolished, their administration merged into a one with a new school being built on the site of Moorside's playing fields. The new school's playing fields would have been based where the current Moorside building stands. Along with the two high schools, Moorside Primary School would have also be rebuilt attached to the new school.[3]

On 2 November 2010, Despite the threat of government cuts, the proposal to merge Moorside High School and The Swinton High School was approved by Salford council’s ruling Labour cabinet. The Two Schools will be replaced by a new £25m, 1,350-pupil Super-school built on Moorside’s playing fields. The scheme was first proposed in 2006 but had been delayed due to uncertainty about the Building Schools For The Future (BSF) programme. The planned merger is no longer happening, ‘’’Moorside High’’’ will now have a school built on the fields opposite the school. The work is due to start in 2012 and last for two years, until the new school has been completed.

New School Buildings

As of October 2011 work has started on the new school with trees being removed from The Deans playing field and the new entrance road being built off the East Lancashire Road.

Academic Performance

It gets average GCSE results and above average for Salford. The 2010 year group achieved 67% A*-Cs in all subjects with the Avg GCSE Points being 418.6.[4]
Moorside High School has been improving its GCSE results for the past five years:

  • 2006 with 41% of pupils achieving 5 A*-C
  • 2007 with 44% of pupils achieving 5 A*-C
  • 2008 with 50% of pupils achieving 5 A*-C
  • 2009 with 50% of pupils achieving 5 A*-C
  • 2010 with 67% of pupils achieving 5 A*-C.[5]

Influence In Local Community

Moorside High takes great pride in the way that it is able to co-exist with the local community and businesses. Because of the amount of pupils that are at the school, there is a great opportunity for businesses to make money. This opportunity has attracted Subway (restaurant) to move next to the school. The school also helps out in the local community sending food parcels to the older generation in the vicinity of the school. The school has a high presence in the community because the front of the school runs adjacent to the East Lancashire Road (A580), this has allowed the school to display the achievements that they have achieved.
