The All-American Rejects is the self-titled debut album from The All-American Rejects, first released on January 17, 2003 in Australia and then on February 4, 2003 in the United States. On March 3 it was then released in the UK.^[1] The original LP released solely by Doghouse Records was released October 15, 2002.^[2] There was a bonus CD included with it, featuring five songs by other Doghouse Records artists.

Production and marketing

The album was recorded in 2001 by the duo of Tyson Ritter and Nick Wheeler after being signed by independent label Doghouse Records. The All-American Rejects went up to New York to record the album, and The All-American Rejects was released October 15, 2002. Soon after the band was signed to DreamWorks Records, which planned to re-issue the LP on a broader scale in February. This time the album gained commercial success. The All-American Rejects was released on compact disc, and on 12" vinyl pressed in most commonly in orange, as well as in red and blue. Only a limited number of vinyl copies went into print. The All-American Rejects was also released on cassette tape in Indonesia.

Singles

The first single released was "Swing, Swing" in fall 2002, and later re-issued in January. "The Last Song" was released April 21, 2003, charting many weeks on Billboard's Modern Rock chart, before falling off the chart. After this, "Swing, Swing" was still charting, and ended its run in August. Next "Time Stands Still" was chosen as a headlining single, and released in August,^[3] but gained no success. "My Paper Heart" was released in late 2003 apparently as a promotional single. After this, no more singles were released.

Music videos

The first music video released was for "Swing, Swing", released January 7, 2003.^[4] The video got the All-American Rejects nominated for "Best New Artist" at the "MTV Video Music Awards". For the next single, "The Last Song" music video was released May 2003, and was nominated for "Best Pop Video" at the 2004 MVPA awards. The "Time Stands Still" music video was released in the fall, directed by Meiert Avis. A video for "My Paper Heart" was put together from footage filmed for the band's first DVD, Live from Oklahoma...
The Too Bad for Hell DVD!. It combines footage of the "My Paper Heart" concert performance as well as shots of the band from filming the "Lost in Stillwater" documentary, also on the DVD. The video was released on November 25, 2003.^[5]

After The All-American Rejects major label debut on February 4, 2003, the album sold steadily in the United States. By March 24, 2003 The All-American Rejects had sold around 217,000 copies.^[26] On April 21, 2003, the RIAA awarded the album with a Gold certification, for shipments of over a half-a-million copies.^[27] By October 2003 the album had nearly sold 800,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.^[28] Later on March 29, 2006, around eight months after the band had released their second studio album Move Along, the RIAA certified The All-American Rejects Platinum for sales of over one million.^[27]
