Felgett's advantage

Fellgett's advantage or the multiplex advantage is an improvement in spectroscopic techniques that is gained when an interferometer is used instead of a monochromator. The improvement arises because when an interferometer is employed, the radiation that would otherwise be partially absorbed by the monochromator in its path retains its original intensity. This results in greater efficiency. This improvement was originally unforeseen and was not the primary motivation for the development of the sophisticated Fourier transform spectrometers.The name is from PB Fellgett, who first made the observation as part of his PhD in Cambridge, in 1949
