Fremantle railway line, Perth

Fremantle Line is a suburban railway line in Perth, Australia. It runs through Perth's western suburbs and connects Perth and Fremantle.

History

The line was the first suburban railway line in Perth, opening on March 1, 1881. It originally operated as the Eastern Railway and ran between Fremantle and Guildford through Perth. Throughout the 1880s, the line was extended to Chidlow and then to Clackline, York and Northam.

Fremantle was also the location of the first railway workshops for the Western Australian Government Railways. They were re-located in Midland Railway Workshops in 1904.

In 1966, the stations in the Avon Valley were closed and Midland became the new terminus. Railway services on the Fremantle line then closed on September 1, 1979 during the Court Liberal government. It re-opened on July 29, 1983 due to a change in Government.Fact|date=October 2008

During 1990 work commenced on building a new North Fremantle platform 1km north of its original location; on July 28, 1991, the rebuilt North Fremantle opened. The Leighton Beach Train Station, that was 300m further north, was demolished during the upgrade of the rail line from diesel to electric as there needed to be further distances between stations.Fact|date=October 2008

There were several stations south of Fremantle Station, including The Esplanade (19.8 km), Success Harbour (20.9 km) South Beach (22.0 km), and Spearwood, but all are now closed, with Spearwood being demolished.Fact|date=October 2008
