Jean Morlet (
January 13 1931 -April 27 2007 ) is a Frenchgeophysicist who pioneering work in the field ofwavelet analysis around the year 1975. He invented the term "wavelet" to describe the functions he was using [http://www.gvsu.edu/math/wavelets/student_work/Kieft/Morlet-Grossman%20Page.html] . In 1981, Morlet worked withAlex Grossman to develop what is now known as theWavelet transform .Morlet graduated from the
École Polytechnique in 1952 and was research engineer inELF when he invented wavelets to solve signal processing problems for oil prospection.He was awarded in 1997 with the Reginald Fessenden Award [http://www.mssu.edu/SEG-VM/award_reginald_fessenden.html] .
He was awarded in 2001 with the first price Prix Chéreau Lavet, from the Académie des Technologies.
