The Buffalo Bulls football team is the football team representing the University at Buffalo. The Bulls play in the Mid-American Conference, and are coached by Turner Gill.

Team History

UB offered Football until 1970, and then reintroduced the sport in 1977. In 1994, the school made the jump to Division 1-AA, and in 1999, moved up to 1-A, now the Bowl Subdivision.

1999-Present: Division 1-A Football Bowl Subdivision

In 1999, the Bulls moved to their current conference, the Mid-American Conference. They retained their head coach from their 1-AA seasons, Craig Cirbus. After a few years of dismal results, the team hired Jim Hofher from Division 1-AA Cornell University to be the head coach. However, Hofher's teams were marked by poor discipline and lack of effort, and won only 8 games during his five seasons at UB. During this time the Bulls earned two notable records. The first is the second longest losing streak in Division 1 history. The second record is the longest losing streak in Division history.

In early December 2005, Hofher was replaced by Green Bay Packers assistant coach and former Heisman Trophy candidate Turner Gill. The former Nebraska University quarterback has led a remarkable turnaround very quickly, helping the team to a 2-10 (1-7) record in 2006 and a much better record 5-7 (5-3 MAC and divisional co-champions) in 2007, highlighted by their playing Big Ten powerhouse Penn State competitively for the first half (Penn State finished #25), even though they lost 45-24.

The team continues to improve in 2008, with another competitive game against Missouri (then ranked #5 in the nation). For updates on the current team, see the link above.

Radio broadcasting

WECK currently holds the broadcast rights to Bulls games, with WIVB-TV sports anchor (and Buffalo Bills Radio Network sideline reporter) Paul Peck on play-by-play and former Buffalo Bills kicker Steve Christie on color commentary. The broadcasts are also simulcast on WHTK in Rochester.

A separate feed is available from the student Part 15 radio station, WRUB.
