Blackman is a
charter townshipof Jackson County in the U.S. stateof Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township population was 22,800. It encompasses most of the survey townshipT2S R1W.
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 31.8 square miles (82.4 km²), all land.
As of the
censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 22,800 people, 6,658 households, and 4,187 families residing in the township. The population densitywas 716.6 per square mile (276.7/km²). There were 6,921 housing units at an average density of 217.5/sq mi (84.0/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 79.46% White, 17.24% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 1.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.47% of the population.
There were 6,658 households out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.7% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 31.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the township the population was spread out with 16.7% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 39.2% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 172.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 191.2 males.
The median income for a household in the township was $40,286, and the median income for a family was $47,966. Males had a median income of $36,482 versus $26,795 for females. The
per capita incomefor the township was $18,708. About 4.3% of families and 6.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.8% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.
