Communities

*Livingston is a small unincorporated community in the township at the junction of Livington Rd. and East Rd., just east of I-94 and the Red Arrow Highway at coord|41|58|06|N|86|32|35|W| in section 8 in the northern part of the township [gnis|630836|Livington, Michigan] . A post office was established in August 1890 and operated until July 1912cite book | last = Romig | first = Walter | year = 1986 | title = Michigan Place Names | origyear= 1973 | publisher = Wayne State University Press | location = Detroit, Michigan | id = ISBN 0-8143-1838-X] . In 1848, a village of 80 blocks was platted in section 25 with the name Livingston, but nothing became of it and it soon became farm property. [cite book |last=Ellis |first=Franklin |title=History of Berrien and Van Buren counties, Michigan |origyear=1880 |url= http://name.umdl.umich.edu/arh7541.0001.001 |accessdate=2008-02-02 |year=2005 |publisher=University of Michigan Library |location=Ann Arbor, Mich. |pages=p. 251 |chapter=Township of Lake |chapterurl=http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=micounty;cc=micounty;idno=arh7541.0001.001;size=l;frm=frameset;seq=317;page=root;view=image ] [Romig (p. 331) states that "in 1837, a village of 80 blocks was platted in Lake Township, 12 miles north of St. Joseph, on Lake Michigan, but nothing further was done to develop it, and it reverted to farmland." However, this is clearly mistaken in some respect, because Lake township is south of St. Joseph. Aside from the year, the other details accord with the failed village in section 25 of Lake Township.]
