Fruitland is a city in Wicomico County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,774 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Salisbury, Maryland Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Fruitland is located at coor dms|38|19|25|N|75|37|10|W|city (38.323555, -75.619557)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.5 square miles (9.2 km²), of which, 3.5 square miles (9.2 km²) of it is land and 0.28% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,774 people, 1,476 households, and 988 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,064.4 people per square mile (410.5/km²). There were 1,594 housing units at an average density of 449.6/sq mi (173.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.79% White, 30.52% African American, 0.45% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.64% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.85% of the population.

There were 1,476 households out of which 34.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.3% were married couples living together, 19.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.05.

In the city the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 86.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,468, and the median income for a family was $36,181. Males had a median income of $28,495 versus $21,127 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,774. About 15.2% of families and 18.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.1% of those under age 18 and 16.3% of those age 65 or over.
