25 November 1944 byKaiser Shipbuilding , Co., Inc.,Vancouver, Washington , under aMaritime Commission contract; sponsored by Mrs. B. Decker; transferred to the Navy14 December 1944 ; and commissioned the same day, Commander P. S. Creasor in command.World War II service
Sailing from
Seattle, Washington ,1 March 1945 withU.S. Army troops on board, "Cottle" carried her passengers toHonolulu where she embarked men ofnaval construction battalions for transportation toSamar ,Philippine Islands , arriving17 April . Returning by way ofUlithi andGuam to load passengers, cargo, and Japaneseprisoners of war , she arrived atPearl Harbor 24 May to embark fourunderwater demolition teams forSan Francisco, California , arriving3 June . From15 June to7 August she voyaged toManila with Army troops.End-of-war operations
With the end of the war "Cottle" sailed from
San Pedro, California ,24 August , loaded Army occupation troops atPearl Harbor , and landed them atWakayama , Japan,27 September . She embarked homeward bound servicemen in thePhilippines , returning with them to San Francisco30 October , and following another "Operation Magic Carpet " voyage to the Philippines, sailed from San Francisco12 January 1946 forNorfolk, Virginia , arriving4 February .Post-war decommissioning
"Cottle" was decommissioned
6 March 1946 and returned to theMaritime Commission 11 March 1946 . She was scrapped in1973 .References
