Prospect is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 642 at the 2000 census.

The most prominent landmark in Prospect is Fort Knox, a very large nineteenth century granite fort built to protect the Penobscot River and the lumber port of Bangor, Maine. It is now a major tourist attraction.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 20.2 square miles (52.4 km²), of which, 18.1 square miles (46.9 km²) of it is land and 2.2 square miles (5.6 km²) of it (10.62%) is water.

Notable people

*Col. Freeman McGilvery, a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg, was born in Prospect.
*Charles "Boss" Fairbrother Jr., hero of the Bangor Avitat.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 642 people, 253 households, and 190 families residing in the town. The population density was 35.5 people per square mile (13.7/km²). There were 286 housing units at an average density of 15.8/sq mi (6.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.60% White, 0.16% Native American, and 1.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.16% of the population.

There were 253 households out of which 34.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.9% were non-families. 19.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.86.

In the town the population was spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 33.0% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 114.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.2 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $36,607, and the median income for a family was $41,406. Males had a median income of $32,292 versus $24,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,243. About 7.6% of families and 10.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 8.9% of those age 65 or over.

Prospectian language

Prospect is well known for its unique local dialect and definitive colloquialisms. It is common in Prospect for all males over the age of 18 to be addressed as "Boss", while females in the same age range are usually "Deah". Common slang phrases often involve the reversing of letters within a word. For example, if one were to say "Sir, that is irrelevant, whichever decision is made" in Prospectian they would say "Makes no driffence, Boss."
