Government National College, Karachi was founded by a group of dedicated teachers and city philanthropists as “National College” in 1956 under the umbrella of “National Educational Society” established in 1954. The society comprised of Mr. Saudagar Darwesh (President), Professor Hasan Adil (Secretary), Professor Hasnain Kazmi, Mr. Asghar Hussain (Advocate), Mr. M. M. Malik and Mr. Shamsuz Zaman (Advocate). The college was initio headed by Professor Hasan Adil — March 1956 through September 1972. It was nationalized on September 1, 1972. The college had been working under double shift programme till 1993 when the evening shift of the college was granted the status of a separate and independent college by the Provincial Government.

The responsibilities of fulfilling the ideals and the aspirations of a nation generally lie with the educational institutions of a country. It is a fact now that both students as well as the teachers of this college have played their roles quite successfully so far in this respect. That is why Government National College, Karachi, is one of the well-known colleges of the city. Moreover, it is the biggest college of Karachi being run under one roof with all the three faculties of Science, Arts and Commerce up to degree level being affiliated with the University of Karachi.

Government National College is undergoing rapid evolution. To its Science Faculty, Department of Computer Science was added in 1996 when Computer Science was offered at intermediate level for the first time in any government college of Karachi. Computer Science at B.Sc. level was introduced in 1998.

Government of Sindh, with this benevolent vision that education of Information Technology should come within the reach of common people also, introduced a three-year B.C.S. (Bachelor in Computer Science) program in ten public sector colleges of the province in 2001. Govt. National College, Karachi, had the honor of being the first selectee for this program. Government of Sindh and the college administration took the project on war-footings and now BCS block is a beautiful reality in itself with fully equipped laboratories, well furnished classrooms and an independent library containing several hundred books of various disciplines. Historically speaking, the college excels in its academic, curricular and extra-curricular activities.

Principal

Mr. Zahid Latif Butt is the sitting principal of the college. He joined the institute on 24 July, 2007 as the Principal. He did his M.Sc. in Botany from University of Karachi, Karachi, Pakistan.

Location

Government National College, Karachi, is located in Karachi Memon Co-operative Housing Society (KMCHS), Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town, Karachi-74800, between Shaheed-e-Millat and Alamgir Roads.

Building

The beautiful campus of the College extends to an area of 1.75 acres and consists of three blocks viz. Science, Arts and Commerce. The College has 30 lecture rooms, which are spacious, airy and well illuminated. The laboratories are well equipped where students can perform their experiments comfortably in an academic atmosphere.

In front of the main building there are verdant lawns and the flowerbeds along the walkways inducing vitality in students as well as the teachers and thus the quest to learn more efficiently.

Auditorium

There is a big centrally located auditorium named after Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a renowned educationist, a Muslim reformer, a gallant freedom fighter and the founder of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. A part of the auditorium serves as indoor games hall.

Library

It is a two-story building, the upper story of which serves place for calm and busy researchers. The lower story is working as reading hall for the students. Presently, the library has more than 25000 books on different subjects. The leading dailies of the country are available in the Reading Hall.

Recently the library is equipped with four computers for study purpose. They are loaded with dictionaries and Encyclopedia for a quick reference mainly for the students.
