In 2007, after almost 25 years of publishing Craftsman Magazine, Angie and Paul Boyer, Directors of PSB Design and Print Consultants Limited, relaunched the title as craft&design magazine. Although the magazine was given a new format, a redesign and a change of title, the aim of the publication remained the same – to help craftspeople in Britain to earn a living from their work.
The substantial changes that were made to the design and content of the magazine reflected the contemporary path that British Crafts had taken in the early years of the 21st century. Previously focussing on providing information for craft people wanting to sell their work primarily at UK craft and trade fairs, the relaunched magazine now also encompasses craft galleries and exhibitions, commissioned work, residencies for artists and makers as well as information about the major UK craft and trade fairs. The main editorial and features are about artists, designers and makers of contemporary craftwork; with information and inspiration provided through interviews with well established makers, and business tips and advice coming from respected experts who work within the British craft industry.
With a wealth of experience as designers, makers, photographers, exhibitors, event organisers and magazine publishers, in 2007 Angie and Paul Boyer brought all their skills together to evaluate the British craft industry and create a magazine for the people who work in it. Now published bi-monthly, 6 times a year, craft&design Magazine has once again filled a gap in the British Craft market – it is a privately owned UK magazine which covers all aspects of British crafts and the various craft disciplines in a practical, informative, down to earth, yet contemporary fashion.

The Newcomer Award at The British Craft Trade Fair (bctf)
Desiree Hope, winner of the Newcomer Award at the British Craft Trade Fair, 2008craft&design Magazine sponsors the Newcomer Award at the British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate, where the work of 70+ exhibitors in the Newcomers Gallery is judged by Angie and Paul Boyer. Their main criteria when selecting a Winner and a Highly Commended Newcomer are originality and skill in design and making, business awareness and skills, presentation and display at the event. The Winner receives a trophy to keep, business support for 12 months, plus promotional materials, a complimentary 12 month subscription to the magazine, plus a front cover feature in craft&design Magazine. The 2008 Newcomer Winner was Desiree Hope, Glass Artist, who is based at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland. The 2008 Highly Commended Newcomer was Carrie Ann Black of Manchester for her textile and silver jewellery. She received a trophy to keep, promotional materials and a complimentary 12 month subscription to the magazine, plus a 3 page feature in craft&design Magazine.
The craft&design Award at Potfest in the Pens
Each August, the craft&design Magazine Award at Potfest in the Pens is presented to an exhibitor at the event who is judged to have responded most originally to the competition theme. A new theme is set every year before the event, by Geoff Cox, Potfest organiser. The potters exhibiting at the show are notified of the theme several months beforehand and have the challenge of creating a piece which exemplifies the theme, but also involves the maker in using new or different skills and techniques from those usually employed in their work. The Winner each year receives a front cover feature in the magazine plus promotional materials and a complimentary 12 month subscription. The 2008 Award, judged by Angie and Paul Boyer, was presented to John Davenport of Kendal.
The People’s Prize at The British Glass Biennale 2008
For the first time, in 2008, craft&design Magazine sponsored The People’s Prize at The British Glass Biennale, with a prize of promotion to the value of £5000 for the winner. Coinciding with the International Festival of Glass in Stourbridge during August and September, the Biennale was a spectacular exhibition of glass at The Ruskin Centre, where visitors were invited to vote for their favourite piece. There were two winners at the 2008 Biennale, both with exactly the same number of votes – Robyn Smith and Carrie Fertig. A very close runner up, with only a couple of votes less, was James Lethbridge. Due to the unprecedented close count of votes, the work of all three glass artists will be featured in craft&design Magazine during 2009, with the two winners receiving front cover features. They all received a complimentary annual subscription to the magazine plus promotional and marketing support.
