Cheyenne High School is a high school in North Las Vegas, Nevada.

The school was built in 1991 with an adjacent 4 portable classrooms located in North Las Vegas, a rapidly growing suburban middle class community. As of the 2006-2007 school year, the school's ethnic ratio is 29.7% Caucasian; 33.3% African American; 29.8% Hispanic; 6.4% Asian/Pacific Islander and 0.7% Native American. The male/female population is 53.2%/46.8%, and 14% of the students are IEP (Students with Disabilities). Cheyenne has a 59.2% Graduation rate.[1]

Mission statement

The Mission of Cheyenne High School is to prepare students academically and socially, enabling them to be well-equipped to pursue their goals and become successful members of our diverse and changing technological society.[2]

Notable programs

Cheyenne High School implemented a number of programs in the 2007-2008 school year that can be accredited to the Principal (Dr. Jeffrey J. Geihs). These programs include:[1]

The Principal April Key

  • Standard Student Attire (SSA) – SSA, also known as school uniforms, has been intended to decrease disciplinary issues, create a safer campus and promote more efficient student learning.
  • Pull-out Tutoring – Non-proficient juniors and seniors who are in jeopardy of not passing their proficiency exam receive tutoring for the proficiency test during the school day, instead of asking them to stay late, come early, or get help elsewhere.
  • Educational Exchange Program - One of only ten schools in the US to have this program; soon to include Algeria and Russia.
  • Smaller Learning Communities - The first year was the 2009-2010 school year. Four houses all with its own motto. To have 5 small schools in 1 big one. A better chance to divide all kids up with right Assistant Principles, Counselors, and Teachers.
  • Army Junior ROTC- Its first year was 2009-2010 school year and was conducted by Sgt. Major Schoolfield.
  • Desert Shields Marching Band - The first year was the 1991-1992 school year, under the direction of Mr. Valenzuela. Currently conducted by Director of Bands, Daniel Haddad.

Cheyenne High School has proved itself as the pit-stop for Dignitaries and Celebrities passing through Las Vegas. Notable Visitors have included Former President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, Senator Steven Horsford, Senator John Ensign, Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick, and Ne-Yo.
