] After breaking his ankle in the 4th game of his Senior year he attended prep school at Milford Academy in New York for 2006/2007 school year. He was selected to play in the Big 33 Football Classic and the U.S. Army All-American Bowl but ultimately did not participate in those games due to his recovery from injury.

At one point during his junior year of high school, LeSean was considered the top prospect in the country. During his senior season he committed to the University of Miami. After suffering a leg injury and following a coaching change at Miami, LeSean decided to attend prep school. LeSean visited the University of Pittsburgh on the same day that the Panthers hosted Georgetown in basketball. During the visit LeSean was greeted with cheers by the Oakland Zoo. It was here that the famous "Check mark" first appeared. While walking through the Zoo, a student held a sign with the names of four committed recruits, all with a check mark by their name. Next to McCoy was an empty box which he checked off, marking his first unofficial commitment to the University of Pittsburgh.

McCoy was considered "One of the country's elite running back prospects...rated the nation's No. 7 running back by Scout.com" [cite web

College career

McCoy is the cornerstone of the "Wildcat offense" which the Panthers unveiled in a September of 2007 game against the Michigan State Spartans. In the Wildcat offense, McCoy lines up as quarterback in a shotgun formation and takes a direct snap from center, [cite news
