Woodrow Wilson Jones (born
January 26 ,1914 inGreen Hill, North Carolina , diedNovember 25 ,2002 inRutherfordton, North Carolina ) was aU.S. Representative fromNorth Carolina . He was born in Green Hill Township, Rutherford County, NC and attended the public schools of Rutherford County, NC. He graduated fromMars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC in 1934 and graduated fromWake Forest University Law School, Wake Forest, NC in 1937. After being admitted to the bar, Jones practiced law and served as city attorney forRutherfordton , NC from 1940 to 1943 and was a prosecuting attorney of Rutherford County, in the Recorder’s Court, from 1941 to 1943. After returning from three years in the Navy during World War II, he was elected as a member of the North Carolina state House of Representatives 1947 and served two years before being elected as a Democrat to the81st Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of United States RepresentativeAlfred L. Bulwinkle .Congressional career
Jones was reelected to the three succeeding Congresses (
November 7 ,1950 -January 3 ,1957 ) but was not a candidate for renomination to the85th Congress in 1956. He was a delegate to all Democratic State Conventions from 1940 to 1960, and a delegate to theDemocratic National Convention in 1960. He was the chairman of the North Carolina Democratic Executive Committee from 1958-1960 and was appointed byGovernor Luther Hodges as a member of the state constitution commission, which he served on from 1958 to 1960. He was appointed by PresidentLyndon B. Johnson as district judge of theUnited States courts for the Western District of North Carolina and served as senior district judge from 1968-1985. He retired to Rutherfordton where he died in 2002 and was buried in Rutherfordton City Cemetery.External links
