Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year

Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year

The Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year is a football award that is presented to Manchester United's Player of the Season, as voted for by the fans.

The trophy, which is presented at the end of each season, is a statue of the former Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby, who led the club to five league titles and a European Cup, as well as rebuilding the club after the Munich air disaster. Although the Sir Matt Busby trophy was only first presented in 1996, the award has been running since 1972, and was previously known as the MUFC Members Player of the Year and the Manchester United Supporters Club Player of the Year.

Voting takes place towards the end of each season, usually in April, and is open to anyone who has an E-Member account at the club's official website. Voting forms are also included in copies of the club magazine, Inside United, around the same time. Previously, voting was only open to members of the official supporters club, who would receive a voting form in the post at the end of the season.

The first winner of the award was Willie Morgan. He also became the first player to win it twice when he won it the following year. Lou Macari won consecutive awards in 1975 and 1976, as have Joe Jordan (1980, 1981), Paul McGrath (1986, 1987), Roy Keane (1999, 2000) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002, 2003). In 2008, Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to win the award three times, having previously won it in 2004 and 2007.

Other end-of-season awards given by Manchester United include the Denzil Haroun Reserve Player of the Year Award, the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award, the Players' Player of the Year Award and the Goal of the Season Award. Of these, the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award and the Players' Player of the Year Award are voted for by the players. A list of winners of the youth awards can be seen here.
