Tenovus

Tenovus

Tenovus is a British cancer charity committed to the control of cancer through: quality research, prevention/education, counselling and patient care.

The Charity

Tenovus was established in Cardiff in 1943 by ten businessmen (hence the 'ten-of-us'), the charity now invests almost £4 million each year on research, education, counselling and patient care.

Research

Tenovus scientists in Cardiff, Southampton and Bournemouth are acknowledged to be amongst the world's leading experts in Cancer research.

Tenovus was famously at the forefront of the development of Tamoxifen, the anti-oestrogen drug currently taken by up to 3 million women every day to treat breast cancer, now proven to have saved the lives of 30% of women diagnosed with the disease.

Tenovus scientists are currently evaluating the drug Faslodex, which aims to prevent breast and prostate cancers from spreading in the body.

Cancer Care

Tenovus has launched a pioneering scheme to take Cancer care into the community through the implementation of 'Mobile Chemotherapy Units'

Tenovus offers funding to the NHS for the purpose of supporting cancer patients.

There are over 30 Oncology Nurse Specialists, Social Workers, Welfare Rights Officers and Counsellors located at several hospitals in England and Wales acting as a support network.

The Tenovus cancer information centre (TCIC) has a freephone Cancer Helpline providing free and confidential advice on cancer, which received over 20,000 calls last year dealing with the many issues that cancer raises.
