nihongo|Hayato Gokudera|獄寺 隼人 is a fictional character in the anime and manga series "Reborn!" created by Amano Akira.

He is often referred to as 59 in the Reborn! fandom as '5' in Japanese is 'go' and '9' in Japanese can be pronounced 'ku', hence 'Goku'(dera).

Character outline

Gokudera was born in Italy and is three-quarters Italian and one-quarter Japanese (from his mother).fact His blood type is B, is 168 cm tall, weighs 54kg. [Amano, Akira (2007). Katekyou Hitman Reborn! Vongola 77, (pp. 34-35). Japan: Jump Comics. ISBN 978-4-08-874196-3.] He possess an almost prodigal ability to play the piano. At school, Gokudera is adored by many of the female classmates who view him as the "rebellious badboy." However, despite his image of a rebel, Gokudera excels in his schoolwork and aces all his tests, much to the surprise of Tsuna. Still, he idolizes Tsuna greatly and considers himself to be the perfect (and only) candidate to be Tsuna's right-hand man, which is also his ultimate dream in life.

History

Due to a traumatic childhood experience, every time he sees the face of his older sister, Bianchi, he becomes sick, sometimes even falling unconscious. He is however immune to his sister when she happens to be wearing something that covers part of her face (e.g., glasses or goggles).

When he was younger, he was a talented pianist. However, he soon grew tired of playing after his 'trauma', and instead, decided to join the Mafia. Unfortunately, no one wanted to accept him into their family; the fact that he was an oriental half-breed lessened his chances of finding a Mafia family to take him in. To become stronger, he sought advice from Dr. Shamal, who, at the time, was working for his family. Gokudera seemed to have looked up to Shamal, and even wanted to learn his assassination technique, the Trident Mosquito. Instead, Shamal taught him how to use dynamite, which in turn instigated Hayato's fascination with explosives.

He and Bianchi are actually half siblings, by their father. Gokudera's mother was a woman with whom his father had an affair. She was a very talented pianist, whom their father fell in love with at first sight. Not long after, they became involved and the woman bore a child. However, in the mafia, illegitimate children are not tolerated, and everyone was told that Gokudera was also from Bianchi's mother.

His real mother was killed after driving off a cliff on her way to see her son. It slid off the road at an impossible location. It's been said that there weren't even tire marks. Suicide was considered, but she had been looking forward to that day and had even brought a present for the young Gokudera. Gokudera himself was unaware of what had happened until he was eight and fled the mansion the day following the revelation.

Abilities

Gokudera has a knack for school and is quite intelligent; he even created his own code system which we see in the future arc. Most of his offenses rely on his intellect.

Bombs

Gokudera is known as "Smokin' Bomb Hayato" (スモーキン・ボム 隼人, Sumōkin Bomu Hayato?), using dynamite as his signature weapon. During Gokudera's "dynamite maintenance", it is revealed that he carries huge amounts of dynamite on him at all times.Originally, Gokudera's main weakness was the fact that although his bombs made a deadly weapon, it was difficult to pinpoint and calculate the exact distance between himself and his target and sync it with the amount of time it would take for the bombs to actually explode. Gokudera invented a type of "Rocket Bombs." Each one, once thrown, causes the backside of the bombs to fire up and rocket towards his opponent like high-speed missiles, which then explode on impact.

istema C.A.I.

The future Gokudera created Sistema Cambio Arma Istantaneo ("lit. System Change Arms Instantaneous"; "Italian for Instantaneous Arms Rearrangement System"), commonly called Sistema C.A.I., a system of box weapons that utilize all the flames that flow within his body. While everyone is aligned with one of the seven ring elements, in order to draw out the Dying Will Flame, a person will end up drawing other elements that are weaker. Sistema C.A.I. is designed to use such weaker flames to utilize multiple rings to open and complement his storm-based element. Just as the name stated, Sistema C.A.I. allow rapid changing of explosives and rockets.

In addition to elemental boxes, there is an animal box containing a wild cat which Gokudera named Uri. Uri hates being in its box and does not listen to Gokudera. As a result of the Sun attribute flame, it transforms him into a massive leopard-like cat with large flaming skull shields on his shoulders.

The "cannon" with a skull at the end is the main offence of the Sistema C.A.I; it sits attached to his arm. By expelling a powerful gust of wind, the cannon can temporarily diffuse Dying Will Flames. Aside from diffusing the flames it does no damage, however. It can also shoot a destructive explosive blast provided Gokudera loads dynamite into it.fact Gokudera later uses the power of other attributed rings to give the cannon special effects:

Rain: By covering the storm rockets with Rain flames, enemy flames are weakened by the Rain's "tranquility" and then destroyed by the Storm's "degeneration".

Sun: The Sun's "activation" and high power output increases the speed of the storm rockets greatly, making it harder to dodge.

Lightning: Fires a charged beam of both storm and lighting flame called "Flame Thunder". With the two flames' properties, it is likely that the attack is a solid beam due to the lightning's solidification.

Cloud: The cannon fires one shot that spreads in a tree-diagram like fashion due to the cloud's "Propagation"

Synopsis

Kokuyo Gang arc

During the Kokuyo Arc, he ranked 3rd as Namimori Junior High's strongest. This made him a target of Mukuro's gang. During his confrontation with Chikusa, he was nearly killed, but managed to survive, after being given treatment by Shamal. He recovered in time to join Tsuna, Reborn, Yamamoto and Bianchi to look for and defeat the Kokuyo Gang. Gokudera later freed Hibari and gave him the cure to the Sakurakura virus from Shamal allowing him to re-enter the battle.

The Varia arc

In the Vongola Tournament arc, Hayato was first defeated easily by Squalo along with Yamamoto and Tsuna. In order to better his skills he asked Shamal to become his home tutor.

Hayato was later pitted against the genius Belphegor for the Ring of Storm. A struggle for the rings ensued, but only lasted for a short time, as area they were in had large explosives timed to go off very shortly. Because Hayato had abandoned the rings, Belphegor was deemed the winner.

Later, during the Sky match, Hayato was revived by Hibari and after defeating Levi A Tan, Hayato proceeded to revive Lambo and Ryohei, meeting up with Yamamoto later on.

Future arc

After Hayato was transported to the future, he decoded a note left by his future self written in G-Script. To return to the past Tsuna must gather the guardians and defeat Byakuran.

He later engages in a fight with a Blackspell member, Gamma. He soon came to realize that he was no match for Gamma and, as he was about to receive the finishing blow, was saved by Hibari. After recovering, Gokudera begins his training with his sister. At first he refused, however Bianchi offered him something that belonged to their father if he completed his training. He later escapes from her training and is not heard of again for some time. When Tsuna searches for him after training he emerges with a new technique and a wild cat on his head.

Gokudera is involved in the raid on the Millefiore's Melone base. After being separated from Yamamoto and Lal Mirch, he and Ryohei found themselves face to face with Gamma. After Ryohei is severally injured fighting Gamma, Gokudera battles Gamma using his Sistema C.A.I. weapon system. A big cloud of smoke covers the area as the battle ends.

Gokudera and Ryohei are found and carried by Kusakabe, who joined in the raid together with Chrome, Hibari, Lambo and Ipin. He shield Hibari from Genkishi's constructed missile attack and fains afterwards due to his exhaustion.

Character Reception

Gokudera has continunously appeared in the Top 5 of The Official Shonen Jump Popularity poll. In the first poll, Gokudera ranks 1st place; even in front of the main character, Tsuna, who came second. In the second poll, Gokudera came in third place, and in the most recent poll he came in 4th place.fact
