Indianola is a city in Warren County,
Iowa, United States. The population was 12,998 at the 2000 census. It is the county seatof Warren CountyGR|6. Simpson College, a liberal arts college of the United Methodist Church, is located in Indianola. Indianola is also the home of the National Balloon Classicand National Balloon Museum.
Indianola is located at coor dms|41|21|42|N|93|33|47|W|city (41.361756, -93.562987)GR|1. According to the
United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.2 square miles (23.8 km²), all of it land.

As of the
censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 12,998 people, 4,748 households, and 3,261 families residing in the city. The population densitywas 1,414.7 people per square mile (546.1/km²). There were 4,981 housing units at an average density of 542.1/sq mi (209.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.92% White, 0.40% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.51% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.85% of the population.
There were 4,748 households out of which 34.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.3% were non-families. 26.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city the population was spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 15.8% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 89.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $43,725, and the median income for a family was $52,238. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $24,401 for females. The
per capita incomefor the city was $19,574. About 5.6% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.3% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.

Indianola has four elementary schools: Whittier, Emerson, Irving, and Laura Ingalls Wilder Elementary; one middle school: Indianola Middle School; one senior high school: Indianola High School; one alternative high school: Indianola Learning Center and one college: Simpson College.
