SED Systems is a communications networking industry supplying both systems and services. Originating in 1965, SED is located in the Innovation Place Research Park on the University of Saskatchewan campus. As a division of CALIAN Ltd., it currently employs over 300 employees and annually achieves sales of about 50 million dollars. One space engineering design by SED systems was a huge 35-metre, deep-space antenna in Australia. SED has also installed satellite tracking systems have been installed in Spain, the Canadian Arctic, and Guam. SED serves an international market including government defense departments and space organizations in Brazil, India, and Japan, as well as commercial customers such as Boeing Satellite Systems, Inmarsat and XM Satellite Radio. Canada is playing an active role in the research and development of the International Space Station (ISS) with endeavours such as the Mobile Servicing System (MSS). SED Systems is a part of the Mobile Servicing System program and the team is currently developing the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS), or Canadarm 2. Canadarm 1 was developed by a team led by Spar Aerospace Special Products and Advance Research Division of De Havilland Canada, in which SED Systems also played a key role. [cite web

History

The University of Saskatchewan's Institute of Space and Atmospheric Studies came together with university scientists and researchers such as Dr. Alex Kavadas to form the Space Engineering Division or SED Systems. The first project was rocket instrumentation design and construction for studying the upper atmosphere. [cite web
