Lloyd Schermer

Lloyd Schermer (born 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri) is an American businessman and artist.

Schermer served in the United States Navy during World War II. He attended Amherst College graduating in 1950, then earned an MBA from Harvard University. During the 1960s, he was the publisher of a newspaper in Missoula, Montana. In 1970 he moved to Iowa and became the chief executive officer of Lee Enterprises, a national newspaper and media company. Schermer served as a director and as chairman of the American Newspaper Publishers Association in Washington, DC, now known as the Newspaper Association of America.Fact|date=September 2007

In 1993, with no previous training, Schermer took courses in drawing and watercolor. Since then, he has exhibited several works of original art. Three of his monotypes were added to the National Gallery of Art in 2002. He has been commissioned to do a set of type doors for the Luce Foundation Library of American Art.Fact|date=September 2007 He has completed large wood type sculptures for the University of Montana School of Journalism, the University of Iowa School of Journalism in Iowa City, Iowa, the Knight Foundation Board Room in Miami, Florida, the "Washington Post" building, and the home of "New York Times" columnist Thomas Friedman.Fact|date=September 2007

Schermer served as chairman of the National Board of the Smithsonian Institution for three years and remains on the board.Fact|date=September 2007 In 1994 he received the Smithsonian’s highest award, the Joseph Henry Medal. He serves on the board of The Anderson Ranch Art Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado, is a trustee of the Aspen Institute and the University of Montana Foundation, and is a former trustee of the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, the World Wildlife Fund and the Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation.

Schermer resides in Aspen and Tucson, Arizona with his wife Betty. They have two sons and five grandchildren.
